2023-2024 SEASON

NO FILTER

We live in a time where even the most 'candid' moments of our shared lives are carefully curated. Scars, wrinkles, and blemishes are softened. And while we have never lived in a time where we “share” more of our lives, our filters have never kept us more hidden.

This season, we focus on work that encourages us to remove those filters and in that act, we might encourage others to do the same.

Fresh out the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

An experimental trial becomes a personal one as Em is suspended between what’s true and what’s possible, hoping to forget the unforgettable.
The show, LINO, is a sci-fiction, one-person, multi-disciplinary story about being transgender in Texas, and a boy named Lino in Israel. It's about exploring identity, discovering revival and ruin, the loss of something or someone, and glimpsing a moment of life you never even had.

OCT 5, 6, and & 7!

The time comes in every play’s life where it needs an audience to grow to its full potential. That’s what Theatre East’s Play Room Series is all about! Fresh drafts of full-length plays developed in our writer’s room are presented for an audience for the first time in this reading series of new works in progress. Readings are followed by a moderated talkback with the playwright. Tickets are available by suggested donation.

Play development is an ongoing process. While we’ve narrowed down the spring production to a few scripts, we’re not quite ready to announce. But we can guarantee, it’ll be a great one!

MARCH 1-APRIL 6

Court Square Theater in LIC

As part of our continued commitment to play development, the Play Room is where scripts completed in the Writers Room are read and discussed in their entirety. Work developed here will potentially feed into other Theatre East programming, including the Neighborhood Reading Series, 5X5 Drama Series, and Main Stage productions.

Readings are free and open to the public.

In keeping with our commitment to support playwrights and new works of theatre, Theatre East facilitates a writers’ group for the purpose of play development.

Writers from across the greater Theatre East community are invited to become resident playwrights and members of the Writers Room. Writers present 10-20 pages of works-in-progress to be read out loud and discussed by the group every two weeks. Meetings are attended by resident playwrights and Theatre East staff.
